Organizational framework

The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) has operated in Peru since 1956, supporting the country in the eradication of hunger and malnutrition, the elimination of poverty, the establishment of inclusive agri-food systems and sustainable use of natural resources. Likewise, FAO-PE provides technical advice to the Government in accordance with the Country Programming Framework (CPF) 2017-2021, which has been agreed upon together with the different sectors of the Government.

On December 7, FAO and APCI signed the Cooperation Project “Smart and Sustainable Aquaculture through Effective Biosecurity and Digital Technology (GCP/GLO/086/ROK), with the general objective of supporting the country in the sustainable development of systems and practices using smart/digital technologies to reduce biosafety impacts and risks leading to effective aquatic animal health management, sustainable production practices within environmental carrying capacities, improving environmental protection and ensuring safety food.

The deliverables planned for the project are the following:

Product 1: The feasibility study and action plan for the establishment of a national shrimp farming biosafety surveillance platform, through the strategic application of digital technology, such as big data management systems and machine learning technology.
Output 2: Establishment and effective implementation of Aquatic Animal Health (AAH) and aquaculture biosecurity management systems, through the FAO tool called the Progressive Management Pathway ( PMP/AB, for its acronym in English for Progressive Management Pathway/Aquaculture Biosecurity).
Output 3: Establishment and effective implementation of responsible and sustainable production practices.
Product 4: Improvement of food safety through the implementation of appropriate plans and compliance with safety standards.
Output 5: Establishment of a big data platform to support intelligent shrimp farming systems.
Product 6: Cost-benefit analysis and social behavior change analysis to determine the best options available for smart, digital and biosecure cultivation.
Product 7: Improvement of skills and knowledge in aquaculture biosafety.
The position is located in the FAO Representation in Peru.

Hierarchical dependency

Under the supervision of the FAOPE Assistant Program Representative, the Project Coordinator, and the guidance of the Lead Technical Officers of the Project “Smart and Sustainable Aquaculture through Effective Biosecurity and Digital Technology” (GCP/GLO/086/ROK).

Field of specialization

The purpose of this requirement is the hiring of a specialist in sanitary management in shrimp production. to provide technical support to Project GCP/GLO/086/ROK.

Tasks and responsibilities

The specialist, through his or her work, will contribute to the implementation of project activities, which include:

Coordinate the development of the feasibility study sections of product 1 of the project, in relation to the biosafety of shrimp aquaculture and food safety in Peru, socioeconomic analysis, feasibility analysis by product and the Action Plan of the Project (2024-2025).
Monitor and participate in the meetings of the Technical Working Group (TWG) on aquaculture biosafety, to present the technical documents being prepared and receive advice from the members of the aforementioned group, as well as cooperate with international consultants and national consultants who work for the GCP/GLO/086/ROK project.
Participate in the GTT meeting on digital technologies
Participate in person in the feasibility study validation workshop
Support in the coordination and execution of field visits with relevant actors in the shrimp value chain, within the framework of the Project activities.
Support in the organization and development of technical validation events of the Project’s technical documents.
Absolve consulting techniques on aquaculture biosafety and food safety from the FAO.

CANDIDATES WILL BE EVALUATED ACCORDING TO THE FOLLOWING CRITERIA:

Minimum requirements

University degree in veterinary medicine, marine biology, fisheries engineering, aquaculture or related biological sciences
5 years of relevant experience in healthcare management eFaFPW7 u7Jvr
Practical knowledge (level C) of Spanish and English
Peruvian nationality or being a resident in the country with a regular work permit

Experience in working and interacting with shrimp production.
Knowledge of equipment and materials used in shrimp production, especially those related to aquaculture biosecurity and food safety
Knowledge of the requirements and permits to carry out aquaculture activity, especially for aquaculture production centers and shrimp processing plants.
Knowledge of current health regulations in the country.
Experience in recording and processing data related to aquaculture biosecurity and food safety.
Analytical and technical document writing skills.
Ability to work as a team and good communication.
Knowledge of the FAO and the UNS will be valued.
Selection criteria

Master’s degree in aquaculture animal health (desirable)
Experience in the shrimp value chain
